The Story and Importance of Telang Swami Jayanti – Telang Swami (1607-1887) was a great Hindu yogi who possesses divine powers. For most of his life, Telang Swami lived in Varanasi, India. It is believed that Tailang Swami was an incarnation of Lord Shiva, due to which some disciples called him Walking Shiva of Varanasi.
Tailang Swami lived a very long life of about 280 years. Tailang Swami was also known as Telang Swami and Trilanga Swami.
Telang Swami was born in Viziana village in Andhra Pradesh at a place called Kumbilapuram. His earlier name was Shivram. His parents Vidyavati Devi and Narasimha Rao were devotees of Lord Shiva. At the age of 40, he abandoned his material life as well as his wealth and became recluse.
Under his mother’s guidance, he performed Kali Sadhana. His mother initiated him into the Kali Mantra, and he meditated deep in a Kali temple. His mother died in 1669. Shivram gave him ashes for meditation. He would meditate near a crematorium. After 20 years of rigorous and intense penance, he met Bhagirathananda Saraswati.
Shivram then settled in Varanasi and led the life of a monk and was known as Telang Swami. He would lie down in the Ganges water without drowning, then go under the water for a long time and come out without washing his hands.
The legend of his yogic power spread and devotees flocked to see him. Mystics and luminaries like Loknath Brahmachari and Ramakrishna came to meet him. His philosophy can be found in the writings of his disciple Umcharan Mukhopadhyay.
According to the Telang Swami, attaining a state without desire is nirvana which helps in attaining salvation. He considered men’s senses as his enemy and realized that the greatest pilgrimage is a pure mind. On a rare occasion, Telang Swamy spoke about the law of karma. He died on 26 December 1887.
The birth anniversary of Tirtha Swami is celebrated on Ekadashi of Pausha month. On this day, his devotees and disciples come together and have a better understanding of his teachings as well as his literary works. Devotees also make a Prasad in his name and worship his idol. They also practice charity by sharing their wealth among the poor and needy as the Telang Swami renounced his wealth in search of moksha or salvation.
